The Tricks to Clean the Apple Watch

Like all watches, whether analog or digital, more or less smart, even the Apple Watch must be cleaned and disinfected every now and then. Its touch screen, in fact, over time collects not only dust and dirt but also viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms that could be dangerous. However, being the Apple Watch, a very technological, very delicate and above all very expensive device, you have to be very careful to clean it in the right way so as not to damage it.

With the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, Apple has therefore decided to update its guidelines on how to clean the Apple Watch. This guide can also be used for all other best smartwatches available.

How to clean the screen?

Let's start with what not to use to clean the Apple Watch: soaps, general cleaning products for surfaces or floors, abrasive materials, compressed air, ultrasound and heat sources should never be used to clean the Apple Watch. The correct procedure for cleaning the touch screen of the Apple smart watch starts with turning off the device and removing any leather band.

Then you have to wipe with a dry, non-abrasive, lint-free cloth. Apple claims it is possible to rinse the Apple Watch under lukewarm water for 10-15 seconds, but without using soaps. Then you have to dry the watch with the cloth already described, without forgetting the back of the dial.

How to clean the digital crown?

The digital crown is one of the key points for the control and correct functioning of the Apple Watch and must be cleaned thoroughly. It starts by turning off the Apple Watch, disconnecting it from the charger and removing the leather band. Then hold the crown under a gentle stream of hot water for 10-15 seconds and dry the entire watch with a non-abrasive, lint-free cloth. The surface of the crown should be dried even more carefully, especially the space between the crown and the watch case and the surrounding surfaces.

How to clean the band?

The strap of ' Apple Watch should always be washed separately. The leather one should be washed with a damp cloth but should never be immersed, because it is not water resistant. After cleaning, the strap should be left to dry before reinserting it into the watch, but should not be left in the sun to avoid damaging the leather.

Non-leather straps, even if they are more resistant than leather ones, should be cleaned in the same way, avoiding immersing them completely under water and leaving them in direct sunlight or in contact with heat sources to dry them.

What products to use to disinfect it?

All of these procedures have only one purpose: to thoroughly clean the Apple Watch case, display, crown and band. But, as we all know by now, cleaning is not enough to disinfect: we need special disinfectant products. Apple suggests using disinfectant wipes containing 70% isopropyl alcohol or American Clorox wipes, which are not for sale in Italy.

These wipes contain isopropyl alcohol and benzalkonium chloride. Wipes of this type can also be used to clean the Sport band and the metal band, but not the textile or leather ones. Under no circumstances should bleach be used, nor should the Apple Watch be completely immersed in detergents or disinfectants.

How often to clean the Apple Watch?

The frequency with which to clean the Apple Watch essentially depends on two factors: how we use it and how much we need a clean and / or disinfected device. If we use the Apple smart watch (but also any other electronic device) in very dirty or dusty places, then we may have to wash it almost every day.

If we use the watch while doing intense sports, it may be necessary to wash it after each workout. If we do a job, like the doctor or nurse, that requires maximum hygiene then we should wash and disinfect it as often as possible. Of course, in the long run, cleaning and disinfecting your Apple Watch too much can become a problem: it takes our time and ruins the device. It is therefore up to us to evaluate when (and how deeply) to clean this precious device.

Apple Watch, cleaning and allergy risk

Finally, before deciding how often the Apple Watch should be cleaned, the allergy and irritation factor should be evaluated. In general, if we do not tighten the strap too much, the Apple Watch will hardly cause irritation on the wrist. If we have a very intense and frequent sweating, however, it might be a good thing to clean at least the band often to prevent it from irritating the skin of the wrist.

If we suffer from allergies, however, we should evaluate the materials with which the watch we want to buy is made. Apple has compiled a very complete list of case materials and straps of the various models (even previous versions) and published it online. Finally, if we are allergic to certain disinfectants, we must carefully choose the right product to sanitize the Apple Watch: as far as we can dry the device well, in fact, small quantities of the disinfectant could stick to it and bother us.

Conclusion

Thoroughly cleaning the Apple Watch prevents allergies and possible infections with viruses. Mentioned above are which products to use and how to disinfect the smartwatch.
